Book-lover's giveaway - winner...

What delight your responses to my booky giveaway post have given me. I feel like I've received a gift from everyone who shared their love of reading and their favourite books and authors with me. Thank you so much!

I've been reminded of some already much loved authors, always worth rereading (Isabel Allende, Arundhati Roy, Charles Frazier, Margaret Atwood, and Khaled Hosseini amongst them) and have added many new titles to my winter reading list, several of which I might never have discovered but for your recommendations.

If you too are looking for some reading inspiration, I'd highly recommend checking out the great comments on the original post. A lovely eclectic mix to snuggle up with in the cold and dark of the months to come here in the Northern hemisphere. And I'm looking forward to each and every one now on my list.

And so, to the giveaway part of the proceedings...

The worst thing for me with these seasonal giveaways is always that I can't send a big ol' parcel out to show my appreciation to everyone who writes in and plays along, so this time I've decided to do things slightly differently. In fact everyone who commented on that post by Friday (whether you entered the draw or not) will receive a little something if they send their postal address to me at kendalee (dot) paintedlady (at) googlemail (dot) com.

The something really is only very teeny-tiny but I have some mini book-lover's pinback buttons (I include them in the inaugural member packs for our bookclub at work so have a bit of a stash in my desk) and would love to share them with you too. If you'd like to receive one, please choose from either this design, or this one, or this one (only three of this last one left - so first come, first served on that one - but plenty of the other two designs). Just let me know which you'd prefer and I'll pop one in an envelope to you... with pleasure!

Of course, there is still the initial prize too - a favourite book passed on from my personal library, some lovely bookplates, a personalised bookmark, a reading snack treat, and a mini book made by me... all wrapped up and sent with love.

And the winner of the draw is...

Lovely Robyn of Art Propelled! It actually made me smile extra broadly when I drew this from my little carved wooden bowl as Robyn is a fabulous artist who works mostly in wood herself and, although this is not one of her pieces, it was almost as if the bowl had spoken on her behalf. Congratulations Robyn! I'm thrilled to be making this little parcel up for you and if you'd like to drop me an email with your postal address too please, I'll get it in the post to you before the end of October...

And thanks again to everyone who played along - it truly felt like I was the winner in this one!

Booky bliss and a seasonal giveaway, or is it a swap?

I have always imagined paradise to be a kind of library.
Jorge Luis Borges
(1899-1986)

I'm with Borges on this.

I think it's fair to say that I couldn't (or don't want to) imagine my life without books. Reading is like air to me. Or friends and family. Or, at the very least, like clothing. I suppose if we want to be literal, clothes might be something I could manage without - 'specially if I lived on a warm, desert island or in a house with underfloor heating... but really, how practical or pleasant or indeed, possible, would it be to try to lead the life I love, without clothes? Not very. Same with books. I feel I need them like I need shelter and clothing and chocolate.

I know I'm not alone in this and I love that there are people out there (and lots and lots of them apparently inhabit this lovely blogosphere) who get it. Truly get it.

I read every day, no matter how briefly, and luxury equates to hours and hours of uninterrupted reading time. I can never have too much time for reading. I know that for many Summer's when they especially indulge their love of reading but for me, it's when the days draw in and the chill increasingly invites me to snuggle up under a blanket with a warm spicy chai and a selection of snacks, that I start to get excited about spending more time with a book in hand.

The picture above is one I snapped this morning of the pile that's on my bedside table right now. I'd love to be able to show that I'm reading highbrow classic literature (or at least one example thereof) but clearly, I'm not. Eclectic is definitely my style and, at the moment, there's not a single classic (or even a literary prize-winner, as far as I'm aware) amongst them. I do love a good classic because, let's face it, it's often in that category 'cause it's well written stuff that's stood the test of time. And there are probably enough classics to last a lifetime. But I love to read new authors too and how can one resist a title like 'The elegance of the hedgehog' or 'A case of exploding mangoes'? I haven't started either of these yet but can't wait to do so. I've already dipped into a few of the creative titles here and started reading 'City of Thieves' on a train journey earlier this week. Liking it so far.

There's also a novel for young adults in this selection - one I'm planning to read this weekend and am very much looking forward to. Written by luscious Laini Taylor, one of the first bloggers I ever read regularly, her first book, Blackbringer, was an absolute delight from first word to last - great writing, consummate storytelling and brilliant characterisation. No boundaries of age there. And I anticipate no less from her new title, Silksinger. Roll on Saturday, when I have a few hours set aside to enjoy it.

Something I know some people find weird about my reading habits (and even infuriating if they have to share a space with me and my multiple piles of bookmarked books) is that I find it impossible to read only one book at a time (yes, yes, trouble narrowing things down... it's a recurring theme. Deeply ingrained, this need for variety, even here). In general, I'll have at least one novel, a non-fiction read (often but not always work-related), several dip-in-and-out-ables (creative books usually fall into this category for me) and a few magazines... all on the go at the same time.

The thing about reading like this is that I'm constantly looking for new things to add to the pile. New inspiration. And much as I love them, I do sometimes find bookshops a little overwhelming - so many books, never enough time to read (or even browse) them all. So I like reading what others have recommended. Whether they be reviewers I've come to trust, friends, family, or kindred spirits briefly encountered, I love to hear what other people are reading and enjoying. This way I'm often introduced to new authors or individual gems that I might not have discovered otherwise.

So, here's the situation: Autumn and Winter stretch ahead, with plenty of long dark evenings and chilly days for snuggling up with a book to look forward to. But, I could really use some juicy reads to add to my pile. Some inspiration. And it's also time for me to do my seasonal giveaway (another thing that makes me very happy and something I've been looking forward to), so I'm going to combine the two.

The giveaway gift will be a little parcel of treats for a book (or magazine) lover, designed 'specially for the winner. It will include a favourite book from my own library (I love the idea of books being passed along, circulating book bliss and good karma around the world); some beautiful bookplates; a personalised bookmark; a delicious treat to be enjoyed before, during or after reading, and a little book made by me for you, with love...

In return, and this why I think this is probably more of a swap than a giveaway, I ask that you leave me the gift of your ideas in a comment: a glimpse into your reading happy place:

  1. Where, when, how do you most enjoy your reading time?
  2. What do you love to read - your favourite genre(s), or favourite author(s)?
  3. And also, very importantly, one or more reads that you'd highly recommend?

I don't mind if the recommendations are all-time favourites, recently discovered delights, or something that's still on your to-read list because it's been recommended by someone you trust. And I also don't mind which genre they fall into. Honestly, the only thing I've found I really don't much get along with is horror. Otherwise, anything goes.

I will be delighted to learn what you love, and so happy to have an inspired and newly-grown list. So happy. There'll be happyheartdancing going on.

I'll do the draw next Friday (the 9th) and the parcel will go out to you before the end of October.

I'm still not sure whether it's a giveaway or a swap, but either way, I do hope you'll play...

And for today, I wish you a very happy Friday!

You win some, you lose some...

...except in the magical world of the blogosphere, where sometimes even when you lose, you win.

a box and butterfly

The Winner

I was recently lucky enough to win a competition held by Denise of Freshly Found, the prize being one of the beautiful origami boxes, which she'd made out of old record album covers. Denise is the queen of repurposed fabulousness and is always turning something old, into something new and beautiful.

I love boxes and drawers (things to keep things in - what could be better?) and was very excited to have won. Although I knew that one was on its way to me, it was a complete surprise which of all the beauties she'd made it would be. And this week, it arrived. Could it be more perfect? A Linda Ronstadt album cover made into a lovely little box for goodies. I LOVE the colours and the cover art. And the base of the box is the back of the cover with the song titles listed, including Tracks of my Tears.

Looking at this (and hearing the echoes of that song in my head) instantly transports me back to my childhood: listening to my Dad's records; sitting on the lounge floor with the album covers spread in a swirl around me; wearing the huge, but then state-of-the-art squishy-cushioned headphones with individual left and right ear volume controls, each earpiece almost the size of my whole head; feeling so grown up because I was entrusted with use of the record player and the precious collection of records, including my Dad's favourites and mine at the time, Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis. And Linda Ronstadt, with her quintessential sound of the 70s. What a girl.

And clearly, as the picture on this cover illustrates, Linda is a girl who liked her accessories. Just like me. So I'm going to use this perfect little box for some of mine. It's just the right size for my prettiest hairbands and clips. Just right.

Thank you Denise. Thank you!

The Loser

Where would one find a giveaway that included a book, two cigar boxes full of gorgeous handmade paper bugs, and a pair of squirrel underpants, with the prize draw taking place from a boob mug? Yes, that's underpants for a squirrel, and a mug that looks like a woman's breast... you read it right! Only one place, and one person in this blogosphere that I know of who could pull that combination off with any style, and that's Linda Sue. And she did. Brilliantly.

Unfortunately, I did not win the giveaway. I believe that the underpants are now going to be gifted to a squirrel named Fatty, who lives somewhere in New York and is the friend of a friend of Linda Sue's pup, Dexter, called Buster. Buster and Fatty have been friends for a while and it makes sense that, as he is a dog and not a squirrel, Buster pass the pants onto Fatty. Dexter and Buster met through blogging, like Linda Sue and I. True story. In fact, Buster is one of the best bloggers out there. If you haven't read his blog, you should do yourself a favour and visit... He has a way with words, and is a very good artist.

Anyway, I digress. I did not win the giveaway. I was a loser. But just because Linda Sue is Linda Sue - generous and lovely - and couldn't bear to disappoint the losers, she offered us all a prize in the end. Made with her own fair hands, out of beautiful textured and patterned papers... butterflies.

Well, we know I'm not one to resist the allure of a butterfly, and so I said, "Yes please!" and Linda Sue dispatched a parcel to me with instructions to fluff wings when it arrived and the hope that they would find a good home on this side of the Atlantic. There was in fact more than just the beauty above enclosed, and the others have already taken up residence on my desk at work, where they are much admired. They flew all the way here, carrying some fresh summer lavender and a treat for my brain too, and landed safely on the same day that Denise's box arrived.

Another special mail day, courtesy of bloggy lovelies! I feel very lucky.

And Linda Sue, you always make me smile. Thank you! Not that I would love you any less if you didn't make me smile, but you do. Even when I don't feel like smiling. And I love that about you.

So, a box and a butterfly. Perfect prizes.

A winner and a loser. Perfect balance.

Perfect day.

Picnic perfection II and winners II

great company + lovely setting + scrummy food = picnic perfection

Even if some of the details vary, we apparently all agree on the formula! Thank you to all who shared their picnic perfection with me - what a treat it was to soak in all that lovely stuff.

I'm definitely going to host a virtual picnic here on the 24th of June to celebrate Midsummer's Eve and you are ALL invited! There'll be lots of lovely food and drink; gentle sunshine; absolutely no gnats allowed; a full moon, fireflies and fairy lights once the sun goes down; optional dancing or lounging 'round the bonfire, and a guarantee of no rain until we've moved indoors. So dust off your picnic gear and start planning your picnic partywear...

In the meantime, it gives me great pleasure to announce that the corresponding numbers (in order of entry) for the following people went into the whizzy number cruncher thingy:

  1. Dagmar
  2. Claire
  3. Dawn
  4. Heidi
  5. Beverly
  6. Renee
  7. Sheila
  8. Sarah
  9. Shelly
  10. Heather
  11. Robyn
  12. Kamana
  13. Sandy
  14. Lisa
  15. Denise

And these are the ones it chose for the Summer giveaway:

Woohoo! I get such a thrill out of that moment when I hit the selection button, knowing that no matter whose numbers it picks, there'll be lovely winners. I always wish only that I could send something to everyone and decided to have two winners this time (in the spirit of a bountiful Summer season), so congratulations to Shelly and Heidi!!!

I'm very excited about getting a little something summery off in the post to both of you. Heidi, I'll be in touch, but Shelly, please drop me an email at kendalee (dot) paintedlady (at) googlemail (dot) com with your postal addresses as you did not leave a link to contact you through...

To everyone else, thank you for playing and I hope you'll come back for the Autumn edition.

Summer's gift *

* in blogspeak it's a giveaway, but I like to think of it as a just-because-it's-summer gift

Windy Day Car Picnic
May 2009

You might have noticed if you've been in this space recently that I've had picnics on my mind? Oh, I do love a picnic! And it seems that many of you share this love and have some great ideas for me to include in my forthcoming big event. Thank you so, so much for sharing them with me! From the very whimsical to the ultra practical, I love them all. I'm definitely going to incorporate them and I'll be sure to let you know how it goes.... Fingers crossed for sunshine please!

Although not a requirement for a great picnic, sunny weather does add a certain something and for that reason alone, I do love summer - even a relatively feeble one. Long days, occasionally sunny skies, less than 6 layers of clothing required to keep warm... love it! Worth celebrating. (Sorry UK. You have many fine and loveable qualities. However, summer is not one of your strengths. But still I like it more than your long, long, cold, dark, long, long winters, so thank you for trying.)

If you've been coming to visit here for a while, you'll also know how much I love a giveaway. So much that I'd have one a week if I could. Seriously. Not much room here for anything else if I do that though. So I've been patiently (okay, not very patiently) waiting for the next season to officially arrive before indulging myself again. One a season seems reasonable? And here we are, at last, in summer, and I've had my first visit to the seaside for the year... so I think it's time.

I was thinking last weekend (as I shivered in the car, despite the glorious unforecast sunshine, sipping flask-tasting tea to thaw my marrow) about what instantly conjures summer for me, even when days are cold and not really very summery. I mean, the spirit of summer... what embodies it? It's not just about the sunshine, is it? I think, as is often the case for me, it's smells that most directly and immediately connect me to a summer feeling. These are some of my favourites:
~ Sea air. Err, no surprises there I'm sure! No matter what the actual season, the clean, ozonic smell of the sea takes me instantly to long, carefree days spent walking on a summer beach. Especially if combined with a subtle blend of vanilla and frangipani, or honeysuckle.
~ Summer sun-dried linen. There are few things more delicious than getting into a bed fresh with the smell of fine cotton sheets and pillowcases that have been dried by the sun. Bliss.
~ Woodsmoke. Reminiscent of barbecues and bonfires under the stars on summer camping trips, this is a smell that also transports me to warmer days, even if it's dark and snowing and the fire is actually in a cosy hearth. The strongest association for me is still with summer.
~ Watermelon. Love the flavour but it's the smell that triggers summer in my soul. And also Christmas. Yep, it's true. The smell of watermelon to me is the smell of Christmas. Growing up in the southern hemisphere we would decorate our tree with blobs of cotton wool to make it look like snow (that never fell, even in Winter) but we'd be floating a watermelon in an ice bath or a swimming pool or a river to keep it cool, because outside it was scorching. No summer picnic or Christmas Day for me is truly complete without a bit of watermelon.

So what about these picnics then? What makes for a great picnic?

Although it's true that the setting and the food and the smell of outdoors all contribute, what really makes a picnic memorable for me (as is true for most occasions) is who I am sharing it with. Even bad food tastes better if the company is good!

I've enjoyed big crowds, small groups, cosy twosomes and even picnics alone. And I recently enjoyed my first imaginary picnic in the blogoshpere, with a lovely friend (who isn't imaginary). What fun.

I think I'm going to host a virtual Midsummer's picnic here in June and you'll all be invited, so get those picnic baskets ready...

But who would I invite if all my friends and family were unavailable (it has been known to happen) but everyone else on the planet had no better plans than to meet and share a picnic basket with me? My fantasy/celebrity picnic guest list? Hmmm.... Let's see.... For today at least, it would include:
~ Nelson Mandela - always first on any dream guest list I create and I reckon he'd enjoy a picnic, don't you? What great stories he could tell, with wisdom and humour, and he is apparently an irrepressible flirt. A little harmless flirting adds to a great picnic experience I feel.
~ Stephen Fry - always good to have at least one extremely large and witty brain in the mix and he makes language sing in even the most ordinary of conversations. It'd be lovely to just sit back and listen to him and Madiba chat.
~ James McAvoy - oh no, wait... he has a prior engagement in Virginia, you say? That's a shame 'cause a slightly shy but incredibly talented actor with a Scottish accent would be a good addition but, never mind, I'll invite him next time.
~ Hugh Jackman - easy on the eye and the ear. Yes, yes, this is one of those superficial and gratuitous just-because-he's-gorgeous additions to the list. I think at least one of those is allowed? Before he hit the big-time, I remember seeing Hugh Jackman in an Australian movie called Paperback Hero and, although not a great movie, he had a certain twinkle that stuck with me. I most recently saw him again in Australia, and I have to say that for me he has that slightly-rough-but-cleans-up-nicely-too appeal. And it's apparently improving with age.
~ Baz Luhrmann - thinking of Hugh and Australia, just reminded me... Baz Luhrmann's movies tend to divide crowds down the middle, like Marmite or marzipan. People either seem to love what he does or hate it. Very few seem entirely indifferent. Or at least this is true of those I've polled. I love it. Romeo+Juliet, Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge are some of my favourite movies, and now I'd add Australia to that list. Very self-concious and highly stylised but I enjoy that about them, because he does it so well. The homage to genre and attention to detail is inspirational. And I'd love to have the opportunity to speak to him. So Baz'd be on the list. (I also love Marmite and marzipan. Although not together.)

Jeesh, my list is growing and I haven't even started on all the women I'd like to add. Jane Goodall, Keri Hulme, Helen Mirren, Michelle Obama...

Okay, I'll rein myself in. I'm in ramble mode now. And you're probably wondering about the giveaway?

Well, here's the plan...

Between now and next Friday, the 15th of May, please leave a comment telling me:
~ What instantly conjures summer for you? A smell, a flavour, some music, a favourite dress, barefeet... Whatever it is, I'd love you to share it with me.
~ What's your perfect picnic experience? Whether it's a memory, a regular occurrence, or still on your picnic wishlist... what's on the menu and where is it set?
~ And finally, who would be on your fantasy picnic guestlist? It can be as long or as short a list as you like.

In the usual way, I'll draw a name randomly from my imaginary hat - probably a straw sunhat this time - on May 16th, and the winner will receive a little personalised picnic-related gift from me in the post.

I do hope you'll play...

And I wish you a very happy Friday!

Carried by birdsong...

African Blue-eared Starling

Heather sent a little bird to say she's having a giveaway. And I'm passing it on... African style.

Lots of fun and loveliness but be quick, tomorrow's the draw!

Connections make us comfy...

Thanks to all you lovely people who shared the things that keep you warm and bring you daily comfort in our giveaway conversation. It was interesting to see how similar themes appeared:

  • hot drinks - these featured frequently, simple pleasures that many of us savour and appreciate for their physical warmth and flavour as well as the moment's pause they allow us to take, whether alone or in the company of someone we love
  • favourite garments - wrap us in warmth and colour and comfort, and many have already discovered the wonders of pashmina-love and understand my passion for them
  • the companionship of animals - whether beloved pets or those we simply encounter in our environment, we recognise how this special cross-species link enriches our lives
  • a connection with other hearts & minds - either with those who are closest to us or with the strangers we meet in this amazing blogosphere, who we relate to, connect with, and who in some cases become our friends. I have an image of small individual flames that combine to become a community of light and beauty. I feel privileged to be a part of that connection. Thank you.

And so to the giveaway... Once again, I wish I could wrap each of you up in a beautiful pashmina but as it can't be, I made a list of people in the order that they commented (discounting those who chose not to be included for various reasons), rolled the electronic dice, and this is what they gave me:

Here are your random numbers:

Number 11 is sweet Heather of Paper Follies.

Heather is not yet a pashmina wearer but, as she rightly said, it's never too late to change. I hope you'll find this a happy change Heather and I'm so delighted and excited about going to choose your very first. I'll be in touch via e-mail to get your postal details and look forward to parcelling up and posting off a bit of pashmina loveliness to you soon...

I want to give prettiness, comfort and warmth

I love my pashmina shawls. I have a fairly large collection (never tooooo large, surely?) and am almost never without one. Colourful, lightweight and warm they are easy to carry anywhere. They can be used as a scarf, a wrap in lieu of a jumper or cardigan (or as well as one), to add a pop of colour and pattern to any outfit. Draped over the arm or back of a favourite reading chair, they are ideal when the chill settles in but I'm too comfy too move. When I'm travelling on a plane, or a train, and the aircon is just a tad too high, they are the perfect extra layer. Unexpectedly cold meeting rooms or conference venues are bearable because of them. They have been used as an impromptu blanket for an afternoon nap or as a comfort blanket if there's no-one around to give me a hug. I've even fashioned one with knots into a bag to carry excess goodies in when I found myself without a carrier.  Or I just have them folded and looking lovely on a shelf.

I've been wanting to do a winter-related giveaway and this weekend it occurred to me that I'd like to give away a little pashmina comfort and warmth, all wrapped up with love and prettiness.

I know that some of you are in countries where it's not winter at the moment, and some of us are in countries where winter is not going to be around for too much longer. But the thing about winter is that it always comes around again... And if you live in the tropics, or somewhere it never really gets chilly, we'll improvise and find a warm-winter version.

So, if you'd like to:
  • Leave a comment between now and midnight on the 14th of February - I will do the draw on Sunday and post the winner next Monday.
  • Please share with me something that brightens your life - something that you count on for daily prettiness, comfort or warmth.
  • Let me know what appeals to you most - plain, stripes, paisley or floral.
  • Your preferred style - modern, classic, eclectic or something else.
  • Pick a colour, any colour - one that you love and that makes your heart sing.

Even if you don't see yourself as a pashmina wearer, perhaps one day it will be just the thing you need to wrap yourself or someone you love up in. I hope you'll play...

5 super senses, 3 overdue presents and 1 public apology

Anairam's Senses

Last year, some might remember, there was a giveaway...  Anairam won a gift box designed to interpret her sensory favourites and I had a wonderful time collecting goodies to send her. I also promised to make her something to accompany it, which I had great fun starting but didn't manage to finish before Christmas as I'd hoped to.

It is with not inconsiderable embarrassment, that I have to admit this has been sitting on my desk ever since, nearly but not quite ready to go. Alongside it, a project for another dear friend, also awaiting final attentions and long overdue. And a third next to that, an edible Birthday present that was due so long ago that it's already past its 'best before' date, waiting merely to be wrapped and taken to the post office.

Yesterday I finished Anairam's at last and it went in the mail today. E's mini-book will be finished next weekend and be posted shortly thereafter. And the Birthday gift will be repurchased and sent next week too.

The people involved have been incredibly lovely and very patient and I hope they'll think it was worth the wait. But it's worried me. It worries me. This behaviour.

It's been getting worse over the course of the last year (or two) but it's actually very out of character for me not to get things like this done. I can procrastinate with the best but it's not like me to miss deadlines or to put off things that I like to do. And I like to do this. In fact, I enjoy few things more than considering the perfect gift, finding (or making) it, and then wrapping it up prettily. Particularly if it's for someone special. It's something that gives me great pleasure. And something I am usually a lot better at. Although I can come up with many reasons or excuses, none are really adequate to explain why I have not found or made the time to complete these projects before now. It's just bad form. And I'm sorry for it.

It might seem like a relatively little thing but gift-giving is one of the small ways I show people that I care for them. It's important to me to remember significant dates and mark them thoughtfully, and to celebrate special events in the lives of people in my life. And I don't believe in making promises I don't keep. My not doing these things is symptomatic of an imbalance I've allowed to develop around where I place my energy - away from fun, away from things that matter to me. And I would never do this in my professional life so why have I allowed myself to do it in my personal life?

Anyway, taking advantage of my lovely weekend alone, and in the spirit of achieving a more integrated me this year, I began to change this. And I found that in some cases this will involve resurrecting parts of me that I have let fade away - changing back. Not looking back, not dwelling on the things that can't be changed but changing behaviours that don't serve me well and even returning to those that have, and do. And I want to hold myself accountable here, and apologise. And then move on.

I'm sorry. Truly. I promise to try to be better.

It's a new week friends. And I'm a teeny step closer to the old-new me. It feels good.

Sensational Runners-Up

Because I can't resist the opportunity to play in Flickr, and so that'd there'd be something pretty to post with the results of my sensory give-away, I made a little photo mosaic for each of the lovely people who entered a favourites list.

These were just designed to be a visual impression - my interpretation of the list - and I occasionally included something that I already knew about the person from reading her blog too. I hoped they'd be recognisably connected though.

  • Suzanne added - I won't add three colours because I'm too late to be entered in the draw (and I'm finding it too hard to decide! :-)
  • I hope Suzanne doesn't mind that I selected some colours on her behalf - based on what other things in her list were suggesting. I wonder if they're anywhere near colours that she likes?

I hate that not everyone could win a parcel in the post but hope that people might accept these mosaics - made 'specially for them - by way of a consolation prize. Not much consolation I grant you (kinda like when I was
convinced I was going to win a trip to Hawaii and ended up with a tube of coconut smelling body lotion instead - I wasn't THAT consoled!) but if it's the thought that counts...
