100 Day Project - Day Two

Today I was office-based, which is to say, working at home. The beauty of working at home, although it isn’t something I often take advantage of, is that I can organise my time around client work to include some play during daylight hours. Today that mostly involved making a ‘mess’. Creatively, of course.

I’ve been creating these little ring-binder journals for the past few years, born out of a need to combine visual and verbal journalling and use some of the tonnes of creative stash I’ve collected.

Let’s talk about the stash for a moment. I’m not just talking about the irresistible impulse I have to buy washi tape and stickers and all things stationery whenever I can but also whenever I travel, receive gifts, flip through magazines or even get junk mail, I have this habit of hoarding bits that visually appeal to me or are memory triggers. I’ve done it my whole life. And, as my life gets longer, that amounts to a LOT of stuff! Nothing is beyond being kept – I even have some pieces of dried paper towel that I once cleaned paint brushes on because I love the pattern that was created. A happy accident… too pretty to bin!

For a long time, I kept these bits in boxes and carried those boxes around with me whenever I moved; houses, cities, countries, continents… that stuff came along – decades’ worth. And, for an equally long time, I felt the guilt of collecting, storing and transporting all this “rubbish”.

But, not anymore. Time has taught me that being able to lay my hand on exactly the right bit of collage material when I need it or the perfect ribbon for a gift I’m wrapping, far outweighs the silliness of having held onto that tiny thing for years. Stash = Treasure! I believe that creatives everywhere will know what I mean.

The flipside of this is that I also don’t want to die like a hoarder, buried under a mountain of junk. And I don’t want to inflict it all on whoever it is that has to clear out my stuff when I’m gone. So… I have become more selective about what I buy and what I keep, I do go through it at intervals and cull (makes great bonfire fodder) and I actively try to recycle, upcycle, use it in some way. If it no longer sparks joy, it goes. If I still love it, it stays but not just to languish forever in a box. Some gets incorporated into arty projects but most is really not that worthy. Finally, circa 2010, enter conscious and consistent journal-page making.

These pages are not art, but each is a collage, a mini assemblage of ephemera I’ve gathered, or a collection of words – either my own handwritten musings or quotations and phrases gleaned elsewhere. I have about a dozen of these little A5 ring-binders full of pages of prettiness. It provides the perfect way for me to combine some of these bits into pages that either become the bottom layers for my journal musings or just a pleasing visual interlude between them. They too get sorted and culled every now and again, and it keeps it all manageable. The boxes are reduced, the collecting has purpose, and I have an easy creative outlet and an endless supply of space to blurt my insides out onto.

What I couldn’t have imagined when I started doing it is just how much I love these pages. I love making them and I love using them. They’re a place to play, to ponder and to wonder. To dream. I don’t often wallow and wail in these journals. My plain paper journal is where that tends to happen. These are a happy place.

So, that’s what I was doing today. I’ll be collecting some ideas for #the100dayproject in them and they may form the basis for some other things I make down the line. Today, just creating some new background pages with bits I’ve collected on my recent travels IS the thing.

Signs and signifiers

March 2016

At work, rest and play...

To the art of working well a civilised race would add the art of playing well.
George Santayana

Once upon a sunny Sunday...

Woke to freezing temperatures and forecasts of snow but brief glimpses of wintery sunshine...

Three ingredients for happy weekend working: laptop, toasted hot cross buns and tea.

Followed by papering up my office wall in readiness for paint splatter!

Gathering colours and palettes...

By my standards, huuuuuuge canvases - at first really daunting but the more I live with them, the more excited I am by the freedom they represent...

And yes, I was still in my pjs when I took this but it was early, before I'd braved the outside world. No sign of the snow yet but it feels and smells like it's on its way! It'll still be warm and bright inside though... painting in sunshine colours is my plan.

Will let you know how it goes...

Sundowners

Get up and dance, get up and smile, get up and drink to the days that are gone in the shortest while.
Simon Fowler
(1965)

It was one of those evenings, the celebration of a 30th Birthday, where at times I felt alone in the crowd. I enjoyed it nevertheless: the company of good friends, a view of an iconic building in the late afternoon sunlight, bubbles in a glass, an excuse to wear pretty shoes and to dance...

Brief journeys - retail therapy, art gallery, or both?

I finally made it to the new Anthropologie store in Regent Street on Friday last... I've been so looking forward to this as I've always loved the shops I've been into in the States. And it did not disappoint. I only managed to snap a few surreptitious photographs (especially inside, they are apparently a little sensitive about this) but caught my favourite bits...

Outside: so pretty and clever

I love the reflection of the buildings opposite too...

...and the sweet, whimsical details.

Inside: a little touch of magic

Felt sheep and chandeliers on the landings and skylights over a lush living wall (three stories high) - gorgeous!

And a Narwhal... love it.

I wandered around in there for ages oohing and aahing under my breath and tried a few lovely things on but was very restrained on the shopping front. I was on the lookout for this but it wasn't in stock, which is probably just as well. So I came away with only a small gift for a friend and something simple, deliciously soft and warm, but in practical black, for me. But next time, who knows? So many gorgeous things. So many. I could move in and live in that shop.

Quite happily.

Warm, fun and fuzzy...

...evening out with special friends to celebrate a special day

Thirty sweet and soulful years, and growing still

Spinning food to share it is all part of the fun

Service excellent, attentive but discreet

Good conversation all 'round...

...and plenty of laughter...

...perhaps caused by another of T's exaggerated and funny tales

Yours are probably in focus, right?

Caught in the flash light...

...and then the fun really began!

Playing with my brand new take-it-anywhere toy - a thoughtful, albeit overwhelming gift from two of these delightful souls. So little and light, it fits easily into my tiny evening clutch... love it.

In low light situations, for every one I snap with a flash, I like to take one without. I often love how they turn out even more than the sharply focussed shots. These capture the mood of the evening perfectly... warm, fun and fuzzy. Lovely!

p.s. sorry for any confusion caused - not my Birthday! I see how the reference to that and the gift sound when combined, but the Birthday boy was my sweet friend ETB (as he's affectionately known) and although he received gifts too (as is fitting), my camera was a thank you from him and his wife for some help I was able to offer on an important project they were working on earlier in the year...

p.p.s. when my Birthday does appear (it is this month but much later) I will be heading closer to five-oh than three-oh! I remember the threes well though - thought I'd have "it" (life, the universe and everything) all sussed out by thirty. Almost fifteen years later and I'm still figuring it out. He seems a lot more together than I was at that age.

Sun & sequin sparkle

Yesterday afternoon I walked past my bedroom and the sun was playing with the sequins on a cushion and painting colourful sparkles on the wall. It only lasted about 5 minutes but what a pretty show.

I love that even the serious sun, centre of our solar system, source of light and life, has a whimsical side.

I could learn a lesson or two from that old sun: lighten up, add sparkle...

Soulfood - a creative day out

An auspiciously named location ~ Creative chaos. Surely the best kind.
A great space, and time for tea & cake ~ The end of a day's play.

The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.

Not an artist yet. But creative, oh yeah! Mistakes I can apparently make. Aplenty. And it was fun!

Simple Things

canalside

Sarah alerted me to the fact that Christina is hosting a Simple Things posting today and I thought it would be fun to play along. In any form - words or pictures or both - it's an opportunity to celebrate the simple things that "make your soul sing".

Things that are making me happy so far this week include:

  • Lovely papery giveaway goodies, from lovely bloggy people. Thank you Denise and Linda Sue! More about these tomorrow....
  • A tiny, perfectly formed cupcake left on my desk by a sweet colleague from 3 floors up, with a note that says, "Sorry I missed you but I hope you enjoy this! :)". I did.
  • The tippety tap of raindrops on the window in the early hours of the morning, and the gentle click of my keyboard keys keeping harmony with them, and no other sound at all. So peaceful.
  • Modern plumbing. I do not take my powerful, piping hot shower in the morning for granted, but oh how I love it.
  • Words and the magical ways some people weave them into poetry.
  • More magic in the form of an sms text message, which flies across nearly 10 000 kilometres, lands in my phone within moments of being sent and says "I love you".
  • Email letters from friends, love them. Snail mail letters from friends, love them. Weeks that bring both, LOVE them!
  • Tahitian vanilla in a bottle. Sublime and summery scent.
  • Sweet, simple flowers on the canal bank, and the reflection of trees and summer sky in the water.
  • English strawberries. The best on the planet. At last, instead of imports from farther afield, guilt free fruit that I love, in season....

Oh the list is long... I could go on and on. Hurrah for simple things!

What's making you happy today?

Basking in the beauty...

...of a mixed bouquet

Take a bunch of creative women, add the opportunity to play, and this is what you end up with.

Beautiful, isn't it?

Thank you girls, it was fun!

The sun is shining and it's picnic time!

Welcome! I'm so delighted you could make it!

What a befittingly beautiful day we've been granted for our Midsummer's Picnic. The sun is set to shine and no rain is forecast - perfect picnic weather. And we have an extra reason to celebrate too - check out the Peace Picnic that's happening here in celebration of a very special Birthday...

Happy, happy Birthday week Miz S!!!

I hope Anairam and Denise, visiting from the Southern Hemisphere's winter, will really soak in the summer's day (although, in fairness some of my best ever picnics have had nothing to do with good weather!) Still, I'm very glad to see the sunshine and I hope you are too? It's not too hot, just warm enough.

Let me pour you a glass of champers (thank you Nen, we love bubbles!) or if you prefer, a glass of Lenore's yummy grape juice, chosen specially to match my purple nail polish (that girl has style!).

And let's find you a seat on the picnic blanket... Would you prefer a sunny spot or a tree and parasol shady spot? Plop yourself down and get comfy...

I think you know everyone here?

There are plenty of nibbles and I can't wait to try your favourite recipe. Teresa bought potatoes fresh from her Dad's garden and people have arrived with all sorts of scrumptious goodies! We won't go hungry that's for sure. If you feel peckish, please do help yourself to one of my summery favourites - fresh pea, mint and chili fritata - cooked on site by our lovely chef, Jamie Oliver, and served with summer green salads and some crusty bread (thank you Muzel!). This fritata is delicious cold too and simple enough that even an inept cook like me can manage it, but I couldn't resist having Jamie come along to prepare it for us, he's such a sweetie.

There are Nen's strawberries and cream, Linda Sue's poppyseed cake, Robyn's koeksister's (a South African speciality!) and Sandy's blueberry almond coffee cake for afters... I might have to sample a little of each! The anteaters bought cherry pie but only to attract the ants, 'cause that's their idea of picnic food, so the pie's for us too!

You are all looking so lovely and summery and I'm enjoying being able to walk barefoot in the grass with Heather. I love a pretty picnic dress and I was so thrilled to have the excuse to buy this one for the occasion - it's soft and floaty and those big orange and purple flowers are a bit reminiscent of the romantic 70s, don't you think?

Everyone's brought a beautiful flower, which we'll pop into that big vase I brought along, so that we can enjoy the bouquet together. I see that Lisa is wearing some in her hair too... Gorgeous!

Mine's the purple dahlia. For a long time I didn't really like dahlias (for many of the same reasons marigolds and I didn't get along for a while) but they have grown on me over the years, and in different contexts, and now I love them! Look at this riot of colour and tell me, how can one resist?! They epitomise summery abundance.

When you leave at the end of your visit, how ever long or short it is, please take home with you a different flower to the one you brought... As a reminder of the time we've spent together.

The more energetic amongst you might like to play a game of boules or with a frisbee? You'll forgive me if I just lie here in the shade and cheer you on, won't you? Too relaxed and lazy too move.

For those who don't need to rush off, when it starts to cool down and get darker, we'll light citronella scented candles to keep the bugs away and a bonfire to mesmerise and keep us warm while we chat and stare into the flames. Perhaps someone has a musical instrument, or sings? If not, we'll just enjoy the sound of the night and the gentle hum of kindred spirits in tune. We'll wrap ourselves in light silk and cashmere, lie back, and watch the stars come out...

A perfect end to a perfect day.

All the better 'cause Claire and Sarah and Kamana and Aimee and Shell and Heidi and Beverly accepted my invitation too, and because others might just drop by to hang out with us for a while. I LOVE that. Who could ask for better company? Not me!

Thank you so much for coming dear friends!

Same time next year?

P.S. I'll post some more pictures from the day as soon as I have a chance to download them :) In the meantime, please enjoy and credit the Flickr loveliness above here.

You are cordially and joyfully invited

to a
h Midsummer Picnic h

Here I am, lounging on the bed in my guest room. It enjoys the morning sun and is one of my favourite spots to sit at the weekend, blogging, reading or writing. And today, I'm here planning a Midsummer celebration. The sun is due to shine, I have the day off work, and I plan to head to the park with a friend for a picnic. I would love it if you'd join us....
