Marigold and Monsoon love

I grew up disliking marigolds. Poor little things. They never did me any harm but I associated them with stiff and unimaginative municipal plantings and a weird smell, which apparently keeps flies at bay. And in my mind's eye they were always yellow. I love orange but I've never been that fond of yellow. Don't hate it especially, just don't love it. Except for that canary yellow jumpsuit I had in the '80s... but that's a story for a different day.

So, the marigolds... how our relationship has evolved since then. I travelled beyond municipal flower beds and encountered them in different contexts. And when I think of them now, I think of markets, of temples, festivals, garlands and the combined smell of jasmine. I think of sunlit adventures and orange-hued joy, of henna, of celebrations and of dancing. Funny how that happens, isn't it? Horizons stretch and tastes change as we are changed.

I changed. And now I love marigolds - unusual smell, sometimes-yellow petals & all. I am transported by the sight and scent of them to warm and happy places.

And this weekend, I was reminded again of my love of marigolds when I re-watched one of my very favourite movies - Monsoon Wedding. It never fails to make me laugh and cry and dance around the room, but it's worth watching for the marigolds alone.

I really like yellow, but you won't see a lot of yellow around my house. I'm not sure why...there is a lot of yellow in the garden though.
Seeing yellow makes me smile, so seeing all of this yellow on your blog today made me smile.
Oh, and I really want to hear about and possibly see a picture of this canary yellow jumpsuit!

I think it's time to try them out again. Haven't had them in our garden for years. I guess I will have to wait for Spring!

Kendalee the block of pictures are beautiful. I have never liked the marigod either, but I think you have sold me. I am a total easy sell until I'm not of course.

Love Renee xoxo

yellow is the colour of my true love's hair in the morning when we rise- that's the time I love the best- If you remember this song- you are mellow yellow.

so cheerful, those images. i absolutely love the smell of marigolds and geraniums. as a child, i loved opening up marigold deadheads to the wondrous seeds inside ~ like miniature porcupine quills, i thought. *smile*

A beautiful collage, the color
of deep orange is fulfilling.
Yes! Monsoon Wedding is an awesome
movie. I love the dancing and
singing and the way the women dress
in most of the Bollywood movies.
