Lovely Lisa has posted six random things about herself and extended the tag to anyone who would like to play...
I love reading these things about people so in the spirit of "fair's fair" and "if you show me yours,..." these are (almost) the first six that came to mind about me:
1. I feel most at home in my body in one of the least natural environments for a human body - when scuba diving. I don't dive often or like to go very deep but it's the only time I feel freed from the ordinarily very clumsy limitations of my physical being, and yet simultaneously most present in it and in touch with what it can do. Float, spin, glide... Now if only I could develop those Man from Atlantis traits I've always longed for so that I can ditch the air-tanks, goggles and fins...
This beautiful photograph from skywatcher's photostream (not of me) perfectly expresses the graceful joy I feel when I dive.2. I compulsively or involuntarily assign triptych colour-codes to places, experiences and people. I don't know why I do this but I can't remember a time when I didn't. With people the combination is sometimes the same three colours they would choose as their favourites if asked, but often not. The codes are emotionally charged for me so they might change over time, if my experience of or relationship to the person or place fundamentally changes. Whenever I recall a place or think about a person, I sense the colours before I picture landmarks, events or faces. Some of you might have an inkling of this based on what I've blogged about before. Perhaps you weren't aware that I can't help myself from doing it. Weird, I know.
3. I've spent two nights in prison cells but have never been arrested:The 1st time was when a friend and I were caught in town after a night shift, unable to get home because a forest fire had cut off the mountain pass and telephone lines to the small village we lived in at the time, and without the wherewithal to pay for a night's accommodation in a hotel or the train-fare back the next day. We went to the police station, where they very kindly put us up in a spotless cell and then called my mum in the morning to collect us. The poor woman nearly had a heart attack because all she was told was that I was at the police station and that she needed to get there as quickly as possible.... no other details. She arrived with some warm clothes and a bunch of bananas. Good woman. The 2nd time was a lot scarier. I was rounded up on campus while at a peaceful anti-apartheid protest rally - after running out of my shoes to escape a policeman waving a sjambok - along with about 30 others who did not run fast enough or left their shoes behind. All of us were 'detained' overnight by the police who, under the countrywide state of emergency in place at the time, could pretty much hold anyone, for any reason, for as long as they saw fit, without charge. Thousands of people - mostly black people - were tortured and even killed during this time and although we were not what one would call militant activists and mostly white middle-class students, we were extremely frightened. We were not ill-treated - if you discount the fact that we were there in the first place - and they saw fit to keep us only a few hours, asked no questions except our names, and then let all of us go... Perhaps they had bigger fish to fry that day & just wanted to scare us? I still feel guiltily lucky about it either way. I was terrified. I still attended other rallies in support of the anti-apartheid campaign but I was always scared after that. Almost four years later Nelson Mandela was freed from prison after 27 years. I don't think I'd have lasted 27 hours. I'm not very proud of this. He is a truly remarkable man.4. I sometimes have a few blocks of chocolate with my first cup of tea in the morning. I enjoy chocolate at any time but at the start of the day it always tastes better somehow. Not a lot needed, just a taste. I have been known to eat ice-cream for breakfast too.
5. As a child I always wanted to be an oceanographer or marine biologist (see how those MfA skills would have been useful?) but was persuaded that there was no career to be made in it for me. I'm not very mathematically or scientifically inclined and have never taken what might be recognised as a direct or ambitious career path, so it's probably true, but part of me still wishes I'd followed Jacques Cousteau. My second choice was ice-skater. I didn't do that either - see 1. for reason...
6. I can only wink with my left eye. It causes some amusement amongst my friends because as hard as I try, as madly as I contort my face, I cannot close my right eye and keep my left eye open even a little bit. Not exactly a wild party trick but probably the closest thing I have to one. Sad but true.
And that's it. Now you know these things about me. For better or for worse. You also know that I have trouble answering things succinctly. Oh well. We won't count that one. You'd probably already guessed it.
I wonder if we asked people who know us well to pick six random things to share about us what they would choose? And I wonder if I'd answered this tomorrow or yesterday how my list of six might have differed?
Anyway, I'd be delighted and fascinated to know six random things about you, so if you feel like playing and you haven't already been tagged, please consider yourself so...
P.S. For those who liked the thought of choosing one idea to focus on and guide your year... You might like to check this out - a list of other people's chosen focus words. It's inspiring. I'm aware that this is something lots of people do - probably have been doing since New Year resolutions began - but I had no idea there were so many online... it's virtually a movement. Cool. Okay, perhaps not in the sense of being a suffragette or anything but still cool.

Oh my goodness Kendalee, the second time in jail sounds scary! Am very glad that nothing bad happened to you but the thought of other people dying is unsettling to say the least.
I like how you can only wink with your left eye. I can only whistle when I suck in air.
I shall consider myself tag and write 6 random things about myself tomorrow.
:)
I knew I liked you for good reason (other than the obvious!). what a fascinating list of random things. I know there are a million more that make you the intriguing woman you are. and I'm so very happy you have this blog so we can discover them over time.
the color thing is so very interesting and I think in actuality a very practical way to mentally define people. I still have the color mosaic you made me and just looked at it last night. I wonder do the colors change tones (deeper, paler, lighter, bolder, sparklier, etc) as emotions change?
and the wink! I love it. I can't wink at all, even with one eye. and "contort" would be an understatement when I attempt it. it almost made my list of 44 things. such a simple thing, but surely socially crippling when you can't muster it.
p.s. was your childhood tree an avocado tree? I loved that little story.
Thanks for sharing!! I love to read these things also!
Hi, i can only wink with my left eye too :) when i was younger i wanted to be an archaeologist, second choice ice-skater. Hope you have a good week xx
Nelson Mandela is a wonderful man indeed.
I'm giggling at the thought of your mom pitching up at the police station with a bunch of bananas. It reminds me a little of when I received a call that my husband had broken his shoulder on a fishing trip in the Transkei. Fishing buddies were bringing him back and we had to meet them half way so that we could get him to a hospital. I took a towel and lip ice. We still giggle about it.
such wonderful reading...
Wish I could say the same about the ocean...deep blue ocean! I'm still traumatised by the movie JAWS! Hope you have a lovely new week Kendalee!
We are off to Cape Vidal tomorrow. I will definitely enjoy the reefs a little more just for you.
I am inspired by the fact that you were part of anti apartheid rallies. I would definitely have been if I was a little older.
I loved reading those 6 random things about you...
especially the part about the anti-apartheid demonstrations.
you're right, how could Mandela be so strong and endure all that time in jail ?
your color visualization is amazing and quite uncommon...love it!
(ps: actually, i've just tried and i can't wink with my right eye either..oh well)
Dear Kendalee, hope this new year bring you heaps of joy, love and new adventures!
hugs and kisses

They may be random things but they are very interesting things! I was so sure I left a comment on your previous post but it is not there - our Internet connection is a bit dicky at the mo' - anyway, I just wnated to say thanks for including my list on your list!
Love it! How interesting and it's such an easy way to get to know people.
Being that this is the 3rd time I've come across this tag, I'll succumb and let blogworld learn a little bit about me.
Ps. I love ice cream in the morning!
Chocolate in the mornig with tea- YES! Full of antioxidants- such a good thing!
Lists- the link of words I am sure are brilliant- I made it to the middle of 'B'...lists to me are too much like school work, I rebel...I think that I am responsible to carry through with everything on the list, even if it is somebody elses list- defeated before I even begin.
Funny I can wink both eyes but can only cross my left which give me a very special demented look- used to freak unsuspecting people who tend to go on and on...you know the sort.
I love how you move through the world- tryptics, colours, symbols- sensitivity humour- generosity of spirit- You rock on all levels!
Scuba- lovely- everyone in our family but my son and I, dives. My son and I have intense gag reflex that can not accomodate the mouth piece- not even a snorkle!
Looking forward to our wonderful blogworld in 2009- so rich, amusing and heart felt!
Cheers- I'm off to get a bit of chocolate and PG tips....
I see you everywhere - okay, maybe not everywhere, but a few places and I wanted to drop by. So I did.
Like Lisa said this is a fascinating list! I laughed at the winking bit. I have this thing about snapping fingers...I can't snap the fingers on my right hand, but I can snap them on the left.
Tiffany - Oh that whistle/sucking thing is cool! I can hardly whistle either way. I look forward to seeing your list! :)
Lisa - Likewise my dear! Yes, the colours definitely do change tones... 'specially with people I know well, which is to be expected I suppose as the relationships are also more nuanced.
Sorry that you too are afflicted but I'm comforted to know I'm not the only wink-challenged person! Perhaps we should start an online support group? Alex & Lala might like to join us too...
Yes, the tree was an avocado tree. We were living in Swaziland at the time and I was really little so I don't remember much but I have such a strong sense of the garden there. It was lovely.
Sebrina - So cool isn't it?
Alex - Left-eye winkers unite! I wonder how different our lives would've been if we'd become skaters?
Robyn - lip ice - just the thing for a broken shoulder! That made me giggle too. Isn't it strange what we grab in an emergency? I'm sure there's some logic in it at the time but it does produce some weird results in retrospect.
Lenore - Sharks give me the creeps too. Luckily I've never really encountered a dangerous one. But I understand your fears! Hope you have a lovely week too... :)
Claire - thank you, how lovely! Such a beautiful part of the world... :) As for the rallies, I know that my attending them had no real impact on the change at all (the end was well on its way at that point) but it felt important to follow my conscience even so. They were interesting times for our country.
Lala - Nelson Mandela is definitely an extraordinary man. A real live hero! And yay - another left-eye winker! We are not alone... See above... ;) xx
Anairam - I always find details about people fascinating - zillions of random things that come together to make a life story. Loved your '09 list so much! I hope your internet is sorted soon... Maybe mercury's retrograde having its way?
V - oh good, I look forward to reading your list! I wish more people would discover the joys of ice-cream for breakfast, don't you?
Linda Sue - Antioxidants! I KNEW there was a reason why that combo was good for me!!
Heidi - how lovely to meet you, thanks for popping in :) Now, finger clicking is something I've only ever tried with my right hand before... Nope... Can't do it with the left at all! Are you left or right hand dominant normally? Strange how we learn to do some things lopsided like this, isn't it?
Love it! You couldn't have picked more random things to share and it's fantastic :) Happy New Year!
