I would say to housewives, be not daunted by one failure, nor by twenty.
Resolve that you will have good bread, and never cease striving after this result till you have effected it. If persons without brains can accomplish this, why cannot you?
Marion Cabell Tyree
’Housekeeping In Old Virginia' ed. (1878)
Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods; and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of feasts.
James Beard

For the past twenty three days I've been eating like a gluten-free vegan. And I feel great for it. Mostly.
I'm one of those extremely fortunate individuals who has no food allergies and I actually love fruit and vegetables so managing my 'five a day' is no problem at all. I have a bit of a weakness for chocolate, love toast with honey perhaps a tad too much, and eat almost no meat, but generally I follow an everything in moderation diet and consider myself reasonably healthy, borne out so far by those things they measure annually like BMI, blood pressure and cholesterol. I do like to do a detox every now and again though, to give the ol' metabolism a little boost.
And just before Christmas I volunteered to support a colleague of mine who wanted to detox as one of her earliest New Year's resolutions. Twenty eight days: gluten-free vegans the pair of us.
And it's been no problem - there have been things I've missed a little (especially in the cold weather, nothing satisfies quite like some starchy carbs) but there's nothing I've really craved. Until this weekend. Suddenly all I could think about was bread. Any and all kinds of bread. With butter.
I know that proper, grown-up gluten-free vegans would probably whip up some delicious alternative (and feel free to shout up with ideas if there are any of you out there) but my culinary skills are limited at the best of times and I've never tried bread making. I would clearly not have cut it as a Virginian housewife in the 19th century. So instead, I just looked at mouthwatering pictures of bread on Flickr in the hope that I could fool my brain into believing it was getting what it wanted.
But you know how it is... once a craving strikes, it's difficult to ignore. And I think bread is going to be calling my name loudly for the next five days. I'll have to hum to drown it out.
Five days will fly by.
What would you miss most if you were on a strictly fruit and veg diet?

I cannot say I did notlike it...I did..But I am very glad to see it back in "original" colours.
Happy Monday!
As alwaysxxoo
I'd miss chocolate and fresh crusty bread with thick butter ... and marmite.
Good luck with the next 5 days!
I've been a vegetarian since the birth of The Little One (18 years in March), and while I am not vegan...and I am not insanely strict...when summer finally begins to show her sunny warmth after the cold of winter, and people are emerging from their homes to bloom again, I find that the scent of the backyard grills charring hot dogs fills me with the desire for one.
I'm not sure if I miss the first bite into the crisp skin, or if it is just that the scent is such a welcome reminder that there is warmth after the cold...
Well done on your gluten-free vegan diet! You are a wonderful friend! I am a bit gluten addict!
Oh my God! Take these pictures away from me! Good luck with the next 5 days! I'd miss sugar in my coffee and savoury treats.
Gluten has become a problem for so many, one of Nordic ancestry seems to be most sensitve- nearly all of my friends are on gluten free diet- substitutes are made easy here because of the demand- Rice flour, rye, flax, barley- I haven't made bread in over a year- a drag because I make GREAT bread!!! I had gluten free, dairy free organic carrot cake yesterday- um...I would pass that up if offered it again.
Never tried a veg/fruit diet- I would fail after the first half day. I would miss chicken, bovine, rice, yogurt and , you know...Toast! Though now I like Ezekiel english muffins...all grainy and satisfying. What are you doing for Iron and B vitamins?
I have to say, I'd be struggling with the lack of animal protein. (I tried a vegan diet for several months back in 2003)
Toast and butter are my absolute downfall--my body doesn't do well with wheat at all so I have to keep it under control or it throws me on the couch and I'm done for!
good for you!
Those bread pictures look gorgeous. I would miss everything. You are doing so well...well done!
xx
Peeling tongue off my computer monitor. Breads....yum!
Popcorn. Milk. The latter in a big glass next to the former.
oh the bread attack! it gets you when you least expect it. it's the thing I miss most and crave most and dream about at night (actually dreamed I was the bread once). nothing compares to its ability to provide comfort at every level.
that being said, you can do the next five days! and what a good friend you are!
"If someone with no brains can do it why can't you"....that's hilarious!!
Only fruit & veggies, couldn't do it, have tried, lasted 2 days. I would miss cereal, pasta, beef, chicken, not to mention the unmentionables like chocolate, pudding, yogurt, cookies, chips...need I go on?
I would definitely miss bread. I laughed at Lisa's comment about how she once dreamed she WAS bread.
You're a trooper and a good friend.
wouldnt last a day!! i know because i have tried. actually i lasted three days. the fourth day is always the hardest, i find. so well done you. i would miss my carbs - bread, rice and pasta. im no so much a potato girl. can do without that.
Quit looking at bread pictures!!!
And then maybe sneak a little piece of bread.
Oh yea bread is my favorite meal by far...so I'd miss it a lot.
Stay well the next five days and do enjoy your first bread in a while next weekend.
Love the pics make me water for them....
Another thing- carbohydrates feed the brain...not an entire loaf of fresh bread from the oven with melted butter and gobs of jam, mind you, but a little toast/honey goes a long way for maintainance of brain power! Don't be mean to you, we are much too fond of you to have you turn into a...vegetable...or a banananna.( I never know where to stop with that word)Just saying...feed your brain. Brains- GOOD!
BACON!
SCONES!
found you at artsyville..and have loved visiting! yummy breads, colors, photos, and overall feel here!!!
I keep trying to work up the will power to detox. I really want to but every time I start to....I end up eating a bagel or something! BREADS are soooo yummy!
I think it's wonderful that you have made it this long! Awesome!
Suzy
Oh yes, crusty bread and butter. Perhaps a scone with a dollop of jam and clotted cream...
I'm eating way too much bread trying to overcome my craving for the dairy that I can't have. Don't know how I could possibly give up both. Good luck - only a few more days!
Oh my goodness! You are brave! And good! And probably weigh the same as a puff of ... marshmellow ... hmmm, now that is a thought. I would definitely miss marshmellow. Dipped in chocolate. And muesli with yoghurt. I would miss prawns. I would miss spaghetti. And pizza. And steak. Also biltong sticks.
But I most probably wouldn't miss bread .
The same as you! Bread is my downfall-i am sure it piles on the punds, as when I do abstain for a while I suddenly start to feel thinner! I am trying hard to cut back on the butter though!
what a nice friend you are...i am not a big meat eater...but i have issues with sweets i must confess~
Well done you.
I detoxed for a month a few years back, haven't managed since, but I felt great for it. Maybe I should try it again. I found it great for getting me to appreciate drinking plenty of water. I hardly ever used to drink it before the detox.
