Time, in bricks and mortar

Living in Europe, one of the things I am constantly struck by is the texture of time: the layers and layers of history embodied in the fabric of the environments that we live in. Reflected in the style and materials of the buildings that surround us. And the way they combine in a mosaic of variety and contrast.

This is the new contemporary arts building in Nottingham. Quite a controversial design apparently. I love it. I love the greeny-grey concrete that's been inlaid in places with a lace design (to reflect the lace-making history of the city), the brushed gold metal, the dark granite, and the glass that reflects the sky and the buildings around it. Clean unfussy lines built around a courtyard that encloses a beautiful old tree. It is not open to the public yet but I imagine, from what I can see, that inside it's an open, airy, light filled space.

And this is what's across the road. Time and texture. The past and the present side by side, integrated, interesting.

I like to see this in people too.

i didn't know Nottingham has a past of lace making.
i'm not too sure but i think Calais will host a lace museum soon.
you could hop to the other side, for a quick French week end !

you are so right. this is was we truly lack in the US. when I'm in Europe I find myself imagining all of the urgent words spoken between people, words that fell to the cobblestone roads, settling in the cracks that we all walk over.

I love that. Past and present - side by side. It's how we live too.

Gorgeous detail in your words. I could envision all of it.

So nice to have a aminute to start getting caught up on my favorite blogs. Since I'm still traveling, I am going to say your post really struck a chord. I am noticing art and architecture in various locales around the United States, realizing almost daily how many cultures are represented here. Today we went through a town in Washington State which is in the mountains - and created arounda Bavarian theme. Another favorite town has a Scottish Festival and Games, as does our own town. I love the contrast you showed through your photographs today. You write very well.
