I love this picture of my mother. It's not a particularly good picture. She's not all neat and tidy (as she usually is) and so perhaps wouldn't thank me for choosing this one, and it's probably not the most flattering pose because it's not at all posed. It's taken from too far away, it's a bit blurred, a little over-exposed, not well composed, not beautifully cropped... but I love this picture because it captures the essence of her: her irrepressible spirit of adventure, her love of life and commitment to living every moment of it, her belief in dreams come true, her willingness always to experience and express joy. This is to name but a few of the things that I see here and that I love about her.
Not long ago, my mum and I took a trip together. She knew that it was what I needed. She generally knows what I need. While we enjoyed this amazing time together, we saw elephants in the wild, which was incredible, but also managed to fulfill one of her lifelong dreams: to ride an elephant.
Elephants have been revered and also trained as beasts of burden for centuries in Sri Lanka. They symbolise the country in so many ways and are to be enjoyed in reality and figuratively and abstractly wherever one goes there. It's also possible to enjoy an elephant safari in certain areas of the country - a novel way (for us) to explore areas of the wetlands and jungle that would be difficult to navigate in other ways. So, because of my mum's dream, we arranged to take one of these safaris. We were there out of season so we were lucky enough to have the route almost all to ourselves. It was lovely. The elephants are patient, gracious and graceful carriers. I never fully understood the meaning of the word undulate until I rode an elephant. Their gait undulates, pure and simple - it's a beautiful thing to experience. Anyway, we were sitting in the howdah when the kurawanayaka (mahout in Sinhala, my diary reminds me) asked whether one of us would like to sit on the elephant's neck. Quick as a flash, my mum climbed over the howdah's rail and took up the position you see in the picture. Her smile could have lit up a small city. And she smiled all the way.
There is so much I could say about my mother. How much I admire her and how thankful I am for her. How creative and beautiful and alive she is and always has been. How she raised four of us under sometimes incredibly difficult circumstances but how we never felt we wanted for anything that truly mattered. How she embodied egalitarianism in a context that legislated against it and passed those values on to us. How she encouraged us to question, to remain always curious and to exercise our powers of observation so that we could fully experience and appreciate our world and all that's in it. How she demonstrated the value of dancing to our own drum by always doing the same. How she shared what she knew and then trusted us to make our own decisions. And how she taught us about compassion and love. Unconditional love. Again, by living and showing it, always.
She is not perfect. Make no mistake, she embarrassed me when I was a teenager, as mothers are wont to do then. We've argued heatedly and repeatedly and still sometimes disagree on things, although so much less often now. But she is perfectly my mum. I would have no other. I love her more than words can ever really express. And today is her Birthday.
I am many miles away from her right now but she carries me in her heart and I her, in mine. And I celebrate her life. And her love. Today and every day.

This is a FABULOUS photo - one to be treasured. Who cares if she's not perfectly coiffed - she is who she is and that's the important part. I never got to know my mother, who died when I was 19 and still in that teenage-angst-I-know-it-all phase. Crap. What a wonderful adventure you had, with a wonderful person- I'm hoping to plan an adventure with my own daughter and you made me excited with this photo. I wonder how I'd look on an elephant!?
Beautiful! Just beautiful! (I hope that you noticed in the little game there was a block with a "K" on it and a tiny elephant- )Your mother is so admirable, strong, brave- all the attributes that women strive to become...you are her daughter, that is for sure!
what a great photo! did you go to the elephant sanctuary near kandy? i always love watching them come in their hordes and bathe in the river. on our last trip there, all four of us took a ride on the elephant together - so much fun!
i know what you mean about mothers embarassing us when we were younger. but i feel that after becoming a mother myself, i appreciate her even more and am so thankful for all that she has done for me.
What a lovely tribute to your mother. Hope she has a lovely birthday!
a life and love to be celebrated for sure! I love this picture just because it's not all those things (posed, focused, etc.); it's real.
happy birthday kenda's mum!
Kendalee this is the most beautiful tribute.
xoxox
What a wonderful birthday gift...I bet its all she would want. I hope she has internet and can read this!
"The elephant undulated along the path"...how poetic!
Oh, Kendalee, I just love this tribute to and photograph of your mother! To have had a mother like yours -- I think who could I bee now? However, in retrospect, my mother was perfect for me...my rebellion against her ideas of how I should be opened the door for me to follow my own journey and heart.
love the photo...that must have been a thrill...she did a good job with her daughter!
what a wonderful adventure and tribute and fabulous photo of your mum...

Kendalee, this is such a lovely touching post and the photograph is just perfect. Posed photos have their place but the natural ones have much more soul.
I love this photo too! Happy Birthday to your lovely Mother...may she have many more years of adventure!!!
such a beautiful tibute!
i admire the fact that you presented a balanced perspective of your relationships.
sometimes tributes are empty for me when they do not contain the slightly more negative aspects that are actually the areas of growth in our relationships.
as for your trip, it would have done my soul good as well. amazing how mothers just know what we need!
What a wonderful essay abut your mother.
Good for her riding on the elephant.
You must have been proud of her.
My daughter is the delight of my life, as is my son.
I really like your blog.
Beautiful tribute for your mother and a great story for the day.
What a beautiful post about your mother. And a gorgeous candid photo, my favorite kind. Looks like you two had a lovely adventure together! We all need to appreciate our mothers more, and then show them that appreciation as you did here.
xo
You are both so lucky to have each other - I'm sure all the beautiful words you speak about her are mirrored in her speaking of you. Your mum sounds wonderful - so multi-faceted.
And I love the word undulate.
I am so interested to read the story and see this pic! One of the highlights of our recent trip was a ride on an elephant!
