I have not moved far from home this weekend. It's been grey, damp and chilly out and that encourages the hibernation instinct in me. I've also had work to do. But, in the interest of avoiding cabin fever, I did go for a little wander along the canals earlier today, looking for bits of green and wintery prettiness to combat the grey and cheer me up.
And I stopped for a cup of hot chocolate on my way home. You can see the restaurant in the picture above - the George, a narrowboat that's been converted into a floating coffee shop. They serve drinks and light snacks and I find there's something quite appealing about sitting all cosy at water level and enjoying a little refreshment. And they do make a yummy hot chocolate.
Unfortunately, I'm always struck by how little they've done to pretty the place up. There's nice wooden panelling and cute little tables with bentwood chairs. But that's as far as it goes. It's otherwise quite tacky with grubby plastic flowers and horribly cheap cruet sets, swirly green floral carpets and blue and pink floral curtains... None of it matching or complementary. And none of it charming, as even some of these things can be in certain surroundings. I took a couple of pictures inside but because I was a bit self-conscious about doing it, they are too blurry to use so I'll try again another day. Maybe then we can imagine how we'd overhaul it if we were commissioned to do so. That would be fun.
I do wish someone would wave a magic wand over the décor though. They have so much going for them including a novel location, on a main pedestrian thoroughfare, and it wouldn't take much money or effort to make it lovely. A few cosmetic changes would do wonders for the ambiance. And as a result, for their business. I'm sure of it.
Anyhow, the hot chocolate was reliably tasty, I was one of only three people on the George so it was a peaceful interlude, and there was green prettiness galore on the walk there and back, so I'm happy. But now I have some more homework to do...
I hope you're having a lovely weekend whatever you're up to!

And you are just the gal for the job! You should do them a favour and let them know that for whatever fee they would be getting the very best eye on the planet with a sense of great taste and style! That's all...I would love to see the tacky inside , however- I am always amused by tackiness, bold , unapologetic , and horrifying ( Plastic flowers! ugh!)
Keep your eyes open for the little parcel..I sent it at the begining of last week.
gosh your stroll on the canal sunded lovely and the cafe george ho my!!..pictures are beautiful ......more pictures please.....!!
okay i just read about it being tacky inide no it can't be..what something must be done :)
Oh!! That is one of my favourite things - sitting in a coffee shop or restaurant or doctor's waiting room and imagining how I would re-do it! (Beats reading the tacky magazines.) And it is so sad when a place is really great for some reason, e.g. product or place, but the interior does nothing for it! I look forward to you taking pictures of the inside and then putting up a moodboard of colours/textures/fittings and showing it on your blog! I agree with Linda Sue - show it to them and charge a fee! I think you will be great at that (I mean at styling, not charging a fee ...)- your mosaics are a perfect example of your great sense of colour and style.
I know how you feel... I'd go to my hibernation mode soon too... Thank God for home sweet home! Lovely new week to you dear...
linda sue - Thank you, you're sweet! It's not a bad idea, although I doubt they'd like what I offered if what they have is anything to go by. I promise to take some better pics next time I go though so you can enjoy the tackiness too! I'm all a-flutter waiting for my felt flower... maybe today... sooooooo exciting - THANK YOU! :) x
nadia - happy to oblige with more pics... I took quite a few on Sunday but the light was so dull - not even moody, just dull. And I don't have the technical skill with my camera to make it work well for me. I'll try again soon though :)
anairam - you're lovely, thank you!!! I'd definitely do it as a bit of fun but I'd be too shy to approach them and I'm not sure I'd be able to convince them to give up the plastic flowers anyway!
lenorenevermore - Oh yeah, I was definitely designed to be a dormouse! Thank you, I hope you have a great cosy week too :)
when i saw the boat, i thought wow ! this must be a nice cosy place for coffee... so it's a bit disappointing if it's tacky inside but yes, more photos please !!! may be if you make a few suggestions to the owner, it won't be tacky any more !
