Anyone who knows me knows that I love to travel! I have been fortunate enough to do a fair bit over the years and I am always refining my list of what makes for an enjoyable and enriching experience for me.
So what are the things I try to take along on every journey to ensure it is the best experience it can be for me? And on this particular journey… what am I planning to bring with me? What am I planning to explore here? What am I hoping to find?
Here are a few of my suitcase essentials:
- a couple of favourite books
- a journal and some basic art supplies
- my camera
- a few simple, go-anywhere outfits, a pretty bauble or two to dress them up with, and a confident sense of my personal style (yes style, if not stylish!)
For engaging with people and places I encounter along the way:
- endless curiosity
- an appreciation of difference
- patience and consideration (or at least the intention of these)
- a language beyond mere words
What I look for when choosing somewhere to stay en route:
- comfort
- a friendly welcome
- distinctive and quirky design
- a view
What I hope to find as I travel:
- something new that challenges the way I think about and see the world
- beauty and inspiration in many different forms
- a connection to others that transcends the differences between us
- moments and details that embody and define the greater experience
- opportunities for introspection and for outward expression
I think that all of these things apply to this journey too and I look forward to finding a way to explore them in this format.

Oh Kendalee - I love your blog - every word of it! I know you will find this journey a joyful one. And I know you will keep a little room in that suitcase for the lovely things that you collect as you dance your way along! (My sister has the weird but very interesting habit of intentionally leaving something behind in every hotel room she visits. She feels that in this way she becomes part of the place she has visited, maybe gives someone else something useful, and makes space in her suitcase for something new!) I think we should apply that in life too ...
Great post, I would love to be able to do more travelling.
Dear Anairam, thank you for your lovely thoughts. You're right about keeping some space in the suitcase for things collected along the way... I never pack to capacity for exactly that reason! And I really like your sister's idea of leaving a little something behind too. I love the thought of things flowing from one person and place to another...
Dear Bronwyn, thank you. I really enjoy your blog and I think we travel (albeit virtually) through the glimpses we have into each other's lives on these blogs. Sometimes across the globe! Yours gives me a glimpse into a part of the world I hold very dear, through your unique view of it, and I love that.
