...and the Pounds will take care of themselves.
My Nana always said this. And like many of the things she said, it still echoes in my head. I hope to discover that it's true.
I celebrated the end of my diet detox with a delicious pizza on Friday evening and although I've been working most of the weekend, I've enjoyed taking breaks for meals that have included dairy and carbohydrates galore. During these breaks I've also been putting together the plan for my next detox, which starts today. A detox of my spending habits.
I have a few extra projects to fund this year - trips I'd like to take, courses I'd like to attend, things I'd like to buy... and some. I'm also starting to put things in place for a sabbatical I'm hoping to take next year. In order to do any of this I need to save and although I do not live lavishly, I could do with being even more conscious about what I spend and where. So this plan starts with the tried and tested "write every expenditure down" technique, so that I can establish where savings can be made, and then put in place a few controls.
I'm not a great believer in depriving oneself entirely. I've always found that for me anyway, it leads to binge spending. So it's about making small consistent savings across the board. I've drawn up what I think is a fairly tight but realistic budget but am still looking for ways to improve on it. I already know some areas that will need a bit of additional discipline applied. For example, in the same way that some people eat when they are bored, I buy books. Lots of books. I do sometimes think I keep Amazon.co.uk in business single-handedly. So as of today, I've disabled my OneClick button and resolved to put everything I fancy on my wishlist instead. If at the end of the month I still want them, I'll buy a maximum of five and leave the rest on the list.
Window shopping will still be allowed but I'm going to limit the time I spend in shops (both real and online) so's not to be led into temptation, and I'm going to try to be more creative with satisfying the urge to splurge. A few little treats will remain - fresh flowers, for example - 'cause a girl needs some things just because they make her heart smile. What I'll try to do though is buy longer lasting blooms and the occasional flowering potplant to cut down on how often I need to replenish them. Taking care of the pennies...
And why am I putting this out here? Not because I think it makes for riveting reading but because I want to hold myself openly accountable. It helps. And it makes it more fun. More like an adventure than a regimen.
I'm going to chart and celebrate my progress here occasionally (just the highlights, have no fear) and I'd also be very keen to hear any tips or tricks you might have for making everyday savings (anything, anywhere at all). I'm open to any ideas.
I'm heading North for work again today and will be there most of the week, so wherever you are and whatever you're up to, I wish you a very happy Monday!
♥
P.S. the lovely little purse above was a Birthday gift last year and is now what I use when I travel. It'll act as a useful reminder, when I'm out and about, to stick to my programme. Check out the rest of the cute range here. Wish I'd thought to buy a few more bits before the detox... {*smile*}

Doesn't the UK get a LOT of rainy days? How can you keep to a budget when you get to shop every time it storms? Well...if you just spend pennies. Best wishes on the spending habit detox. Your goals are most excellent.
Good luck with the financial fast. I think it is a good thing to do every now and then. We recently revised a lot of our spending too - it's funny how you can spend money on things you don't really need.
yoga and dolphins!!! so worth the penny-pinching! I wish you luck on saving and want to hear about any tricks you discover to make it easier.
speaking of dolphins, thank you dear friend for the sparkly wishes you sent my way. I felt the love across the ocean and my heart was happy.
Sounds a great idea. Love the purse.
I just live where there's nothing to buy. Books, however, are a necessity. They keep the brain sharp! My money is saved by buying few articles of clothing. There aren't too many restaurants here, so our eating out is mostly saved for vacations.
I think your "writing it all down" plan is going to be very helpful. I think if I had written down that I purchased a $15.00 art magazine yesterday, I would be shocked. I won't write that one down.
I'll send you some postive thoughts on your lessened expenditures.
Good luck on your spending detox..it will be worth it! xx
Kendalee, What i usually do is bookmark an object of desire and visit it often, or if I am in a shop of irresistable adorableness I carry desired object around with me in the shop until I tire of it. this could put a dent in your schedule , requiring a lot of time but generally I walk out empty handed. The money saved is the money I never had to spend anyway...I did go to the site where the coin purse lives but luckily they donot ship outside of the UK. Whew! I could have purchased ,easily, three objects from there!
Oh, good for you! Writing it all down is so eye opening... we did it years ago and were amazed at where the little pennies went and how they accumulated into more than the 'dollar' purchases! Think I need to do the same.
Glad you enjoyed a cheesy pizza!
Good luck Kenda! I am a terrible spendaholic though I do go through times of not shoppping at all. I think the internet makes it all too easy though and Amazon is also helped a lot by me! I do keep a record of all my card transactions and cheques and a running total of money I have so I always know and rarely go over any limits. I think this is from years of being really poor when I was a student and later and never having a clue how overdrawn I was! I also always save every month-I know it is probably a luxury to be able to do so these days though.
I hope your presentation went well today.
The purse is great!
Zinnias....I discovered them last year...in spite of the fact that I work in an area involved with agriculture, I have a brown thumb. I apologize to plants before I bring them home with me.
Last summer I was sent a packet of zinnia seeds, with the instructions to plant them in a pot, put the pot in the sun, and water every other day or so. Skeptically...very, very skeptically...I did.
I had the most wonderful, colorful, bright and happy flowers all through the middle of summer until frost.
If you save the money on the fresh flowers being purchased, you can buy more books during that season... :)
Great job with the diet detox! I'm impressed! I hope your reunion with carbs and dairy is all that you imagined it would be:)
On to the next challenge... will this one be more difficult? Do keep us posted!
I am actually making progress on my spending detox. My clutter detox is a little slower.
What a great idea. And you wanna take a sabattical? Wow. What are your plans? Going around the world visiting old places and friends I'll guess?
Go for it girl. And we make it hard on you when you were spending to much so do keep us informed.
Hugs Dagmar
oh, my - that one click button is disastrous! good girl - you have a lot more control than i do!
I love the little purse! And once again...your blog is inspiring me to think things through for myself!!
Best of luck!
(still impressed with your cleanse. I'm going to start one as soon as my family gets rid of sick germs!!)
Inspiring! I am a few weeks behind you -- diet detox next week (prelims starting today -- no caffeine, no wheat, no dairy) -- spending/budget detox the following week (I shudder to think about that one) -- and I like that clutter detox idea -- maybe I've already started that, I've been slowly going through drawers and cleaning them out in the past month. Anyway...inspiring and comforting that there is another soul across the ocean that is doing something similar!
good luck with the new savings plan. I'm sure you will do well. Cutting down on Amazon, right there, should be a good idea.
I have several ways I save, and most of them are automatic deposits into savings accounts. (retirement acct, basic savings for my son's college, money market, etc) I keep the amounts reasonable and then forget about them. That way it doesn't hurt at all and then after a few years I notice larger numbers. You could do something similar with the funds being earmarked for your travels, new computer etc. (that yoga retreat looks lovely!)
good luck!
And whoever said 'just live where there is nothing do buy,' has never been to Etsy! Hehe..
