On my way in to work yesterday morning I paused to take some pictures of the autumnal leaf litter, which I find endlessly attractive... Pretty isn't it?

During the day the sky grew steadily more gloomy and it was raining by lunchtime. Ice cold, chill-you-to-the-core wintery rain.
And then, when I looked out of my office window at about 4 o'clock, this is what I saw...

Not rain anymore but...

SNOW!!!
Snow. And quite a lot of it. For a while, it was thick and soft in the air. To settle on the ground after all that wetness, it needed to be.
By the time I walked home, everything was dusted with it...

Snow. Not common in these parts and unheard of at this time of year!

We sometimes have a little in January or February. And it might lie on the ground for a few days at a time. This year, the year of no-summer-at-all, we even had quite a heavy snowfall in March. But it can go years with no snow at all.
And yet here it is, in October.
Perhaps because I was born and raised in much warmer climes, where sunshine, watermelon and beaches = Christmas, I love the snow. It seems to me to make the cold worthwhile. I know it gets dirty and slows down travel... but just when it's falling, as it dampens down the noise of the the city and covers everything with a layer of pristine loveliness, it is perfect and somehow magical to me. Like sugar frosting. I love it.
This morning it's gone. Leaving only the memory of itself in the icy air. I fear it's going to be a bitter winter.

I was expecting frosting on cupcakes, and being my usual greedy self, and not having had breakfast yet, I scooted over to your blog to feast my eyes - but this is oh so much better! I have never seen snow up close in real life. I can't wait for an opportunity to do so.(Great photos, as always!)
snow ..! oh my..i just can't imagine it at the moment (i mean here).
But you could take these beautiful pics and i'm glad you enjoy the frost and the snow.
wish you a lovely day, hot tea or chocolate, woollies..
:-)
ps: i wonder where you were born and raised ? (if it's not too indiscrete)
holy moly!
what a turn of events. hope you had hot tea and a cozy afgan waiting for you.
Oh Dear, Too soon! We have had frosty mornings, fog, that burns off so that I can still take long walks in the afternoon with the pup. Snow- NO!
Your photos are lovely as usual however! This could be an interesting winter.
I love the snow- but i love how you took us through the day- i sware it just got cold in this room viewing your pictures..yet i found them so lovely
where did you grow up? here in beautiful south africa, december is about watermelons, sunshine and beaches : ) i will bask in the sunshine a little longer for you today.
I love the snow, just when it's dusting the ground and starting to fall. I completely agree -- like magic.
anairam - Oh, I hope you do have the opportunity. Snow is SO cool. And not just literally!
m.c.i.s - Thank goodness for tea, hot chocolate and woolies! :) I was born in South Africa and lived there until I was 21. And then again for 5 years in the late 90's before my work brought me back to Europe... A part of my heart still calls it home and probably always will. Africa does that I think - get's into the blood and never really leaves.
stephanie - It was like living the Crowded House song, Four Seasons in One Day! Tea and mohair blanket got me through it :)
linda sue - I do feel for people who have to walk their pooches no matter what the weather! I love snow but NOT cold! Interesting winter ahead indeed...
nadia - thank you! I wish I knew how to capture light sparkling on the snow better - it's so very pretty!
claire - Exactly! :) And that's where I made those associations too. Grew up mostly in Hermanus... Where are you?
karen - Incredible that something as fragile as a snowflake can last beyond a moment, isn't it? That's part of the magic!
hey! I was visiting here while you were leaving me a comment. kismet.
