You might have gathered by now that I quite like to travel?
As far as sources of soulfood goes, travel is my definitely one of mine. It's where I learn most about my world and those that I share it with, and it's where I often learn the profoundest things about myself.
It doesn't really matter how long or short the trip is, or where it takes me either. I love the planning, I love the experience itself, and I love the memories that I carry with me forever afterwards. I also love it if I am able to share that experience with someone special.
Towards the end of last year my mum and I travelled to Sri Lanka for one of the most fabulous adventures of my life to-date. It was memorable for so many reasons: marking a milestone in my interior life; great quality time with my mother (a very special someone); my first visit to one of the most interesting, culturally rich, and naturally beautiful places on the planet; Buddhist temples; elephants in the wild; the Indian Ocean; meeting lovely people - other travellers as well as locals; spiced chai; great food....
There was nothing that I did not enjoy about the experience!
We stayed in some incredible places while we were there too and in the foyer of one, there were these beautiful paintings of Lotus flowers. The real thing was growing in profusion in the lilypond courtyard just beyond the window.

It was so cool and tranquil in there - eco-chic perfection - and these paintings by local artists were so serene and so fitting. I loved them.
And I quite fancied trying to recreate something like them. A little smaller, but a fairly blatant knock-off. I especially liked the idea of using metallic paint and metallic leaf, which I had never done before.
So here is mine...

Err... Okay, so I won't be packing in my day job to make a living from my art, but I really had fun doing this. And I do like the texture and the metallic effect, especially up close.

I might even put it in a frame and consider hanging it. Amazing what a frame can make up for in a piece... I'll let you know how it turns out.
I'll also share some more photo's of the inspiring place that houses the originals - Vil Uyana. I only took about a bazillion!

This is absolutely beautiful, kendalee! I really would like to see more of your paintings on your blog! And also of your journal that you posted about earlier ...
The trip to Sri Lanka sounds like it was an amazing experience. I think your painting is really great, and in my opinion, I definitely think you should frame and hang it!
Thank you anairam, I really value your lovely and encouraging feedback! I am quite shy about putting my little projects out in a world so full of creative talent but will definitely share some more of these with you as I also love to see all the things other people make.
Thank you bronwyn, that means a lot to me! Sri Lanka WAS amazing and having this on the wall will be a reminder of that great experience won't it? So that seems good reason to put it up... :o)
I love the hints of gold. Wall-worthy!
Thank you stephanie! I love the gold too. It adds a subtle lustre that is quite interesting. I can see why Klimt became addicted to using it!
Excellent Kenda! Your creations are definitely worthy of the world.
Thanks bruce, how lovely to hear that! I really enjoyed doing this one and it keeps reminding me of the amazing trip that inspired it too, which is even nicer :o)
